Highlights
- Closing one block of First Street in downtown Napa; diverting traffic around the work zone – we needed two attempts to fit the steel containment and were still able to open up the street on schedule.
- Restoring the historic Goodman sign – carved sandstone.
Biggest Challenge
It was noted that the stone elements continued to move after the earthquake as previous observations confirmed; a single stone on the parapet appeared to support the stone above. The challenge was to get this containment in place before the entire tower came down.
Project Details
The Napa Earthquake of August 2014 caused significant damage to the historic Goodman Library. The building had been yellow-tagged, allowing only the rear portion of the building usable. The contract included the fabrication and installation of a steel-containment structure to secure the tower from collapse. This would enable us to remove the existing temporary scaffold and install a new masonry scaffold to facilitate future repair work.
After securing the site in 2015 it was time now to begin the tedious restoration of the Historic Goodman Library. We stabilized the stone walls using structural grouting techniques working both from the interior and exterior. Shored and reconstructed walls, window openings, and main tower. Finally, repointing, window restoration, and painting.
