When Rainbow team members talk about what it’s like to work at Rainbow, there’s one word that comes up again and again: family. Whether it’s passing knowledge from one generation to the next or developing the kind of bonds that only come from working side by side, the connections we share are key to our success as a historic restoration and waterproofing contractor. Now, we are pleased to welcome Nick Halle, our new Project Manager, into the Rainbow family.
Construction As a Carefully Coordinated Masterpiece
Nick may be new to Rainbow, but he’s not new to construction.
Born and raised in Walnut Creek, he always had an interest in the field and chose Construction Management as his major when applying to college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. But it wasn’t until a year into his studies that he truly fell in love with and found a deeper appreciation for the industry and the process.
Going into the summer I had the opportunity to work as a carpenter apprentice for a summer and “learn by doing” (Cal Poly’s mantra). At that point, I had been around the talk of construction and design for most of my life, but I never saw it. Sure, I saw it in passing just like everyone else driving past a construction site, but I had never stopped to understand what each worker was doing. That summer, I was put in a crew of 30+ carpenters and laborers, on a project of over 100 workers, and to say the first day felt overwhelming would be an understatement. Slowly, I started to see past all the movement and craziness to see the carefully coordinated masterpiece I was a part of. That summer, I gained a whole lot of respect for the physical aspects of constructions along with a new appreciation for and interest in the planning and coordination aspects of construction.
After graduation, he joined Pankow Builders as a general contractor, where he gained valuable experience in the field and helped bring innovative projects to life. Eventually, however, it was time to expand his horizons.
Why a Historic Restoration and Waterproofing Contractor?
General commercial building construction is an essential part of how our communities grow. Waterproofing and historic restoration are how we protect them. This requires specialization. From restoring windows to relining water tanks to redesigning and repairing original features in historic buildings, a historic restoration and waterproofing contractor relies on a high degree of technical skill, innovative thinking, and collaboration.
That’s part of what drew Nick to Rainbow.
After working on new construction projects for the beginning of my career I am looking forward to the added problem solving that presents itself in the restoration field. Being relatively new to waterproofing and restoration, I will be trying to get a taste of all the different kinds of projects Rainbow tackles.
But Nick’s interest isn’t just the immediate; he is deeply aware of the role a historic restoration and waterproofing contractor can play in the future of the San Francisco Bay Area.
In addition to the great people and company environment, there was a conversation with a new colleague of mine that stuck with me. I was asked what I like about construction, to which I answered: beyond my natural interest in construction is the sense of pride and accomplishment knowing I’m able to contribute and have a lasting impact on a building.
This echoes the thoughts of his new teammates, whose commitment to building rehabilitation often stems from the way it allows us to shape the future while preserving the past.
Looking Ahead
Whether it’s understanding how to honor the aesthetic vision of architectural greats, complying with complex safety standards, or building strong relationships with industry partners, the work Rainbow does relies on the diverse skills of our team members. And while each individual’s knowledge and abilities are great assets, it is the combination of our strengths that helps us truly shine. As Nick moves into this new stage of his career, we are thrilled to benefit from his experience and can’t wait to see what we will build together.
